The asset manager for a changing world

SME ALTERNATIVE FINANCING
INVESTING IN SUSTAINABLE GROWTH
The financing of UK Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) has changed considerably since the global financial crisis and looks set to evolve further. We believe there is a sizeable under-served segment of real SMEs in the UK market, who require financing to achieve their goals. At BNP Paribas Asset Management we want to make a difference by providing our investors with sustainable value, while contributing to a better world for future generations. This is why we are investing in the sustainable growth of UK SMEs via our originate-to-manage platform.
IN THE ASSET MIX
Investing in small and medium-sized companies offers diversification benefits, fixed rate returns and is a recognised form of impact.
THE BENEFITS
SME Financing provides an attractive risk reward profile, whilst supporting the real economy.
IMPACT INVESTING
Supporting UK companies and communities offers clear and measurable societal and economic benefits.
SME finance is a broad sector. BNP Paribas Asset Management has identified a large, untapped part in the middle of the UK market – one that has opened up in the past 10 years. The bottom end is served by peer-to-peer lending while the top is dominated by banks providing secured loans to bigger enterprises. In the middle is a sizeable segment of profitable, well-run SMEs with healthy cashflows – and data to prove it. They are real economy companies but don’t enjoy easy access to finance.
TARGETING THE REAL SMEs
Identifying an under-served segment of the SME market who are seeking new ways to raise finance.

Who We Work With
Carefully selected partnerships that enable loan volume and servicing.
BNP Paribas Asset Management’s SME Alternative Financing platform is supported by the infrastructure of a solid A+ rated bank and selected third-party partners. Two of our key partnerships enable us to originate quality loans across the UK, helping us to raise loan volumes. These partners can also support credit analysis and industrialize the end-to-end lending process.

BNP Paribas has also created an outsourced loan administration specialist team, which is in charge of servicing these loans. This enables our investment team to focus on the credit approval process and monitoring and maintenance of the portfolio.
Origination Partners
CAPLE
Caple is a European provider of alternative credit for small and medium-sized business. This SME specialist has built a proprietary technology platform which offers access to a network of more than 70 local accountancy and advisory firms. Many of the firms they advise are looking for finance outside traditional bank lending. This platform facilitates end-to-end credit applications. Initial credit assessments will be made by Caple’s experienced credit analysis team. Caple’s technology also ensures transparency and standardisation of loan terms and documentation. As part of the strategic alliance BNP Paribas Asset Management has acquired a 10 per cent stake in Caple.
Dominic Buch, Caple’s Managing Partner, says: “Caple’s experienced local market credit teams, partner networks and proprietary technology, together with BNP Paribas Asset Management’s credit expertise and institutional distribution capability is a compelling combination. This alliance allows us to effectively address the significant gaps in the European funding landscape by offering access to alternative credit to complement traditional lending models.
CODE Investing
CODE Investing is a fintech company that focusses on providing SMEs with direct access to debt finance via a broad network of traditional and alternative lending partners. They offer businesses a more efficient, cost-effective and transparent way to borrow finance, working both with intermediaries and businesses directly. The platform’s technology qualifies and matches businesses against the credit criteria of institutional partners, enabling them to access secure finance within weeks rather than months. Each qualifying business is closely assessed by CODE’s knowledgeable credit analysis team. An experienced origination specialist also works closely with the business throughout the process to ensure the best loan terms are agreed before documentation is issued.
Ayan Mitra, CODE Investing CEO and founder, says: “Accessing finance has traditionally been a lengthy and frustrating process for SMEs. CODE aims to deliver a more streamlined, certain and user-friendly experience to SMEs in search of growth capital. With our emphasis on institutional rather than retail lenders we believe CODE’s marketplace will ultimately be able to provide SMEs with an aggregate view of financing available in the market.”
